*feel free to let me know what other signs you want to see posted on here and i will gladly add them to the collection.

introduction.

hello.
my name is joe intile.
i am a digital arts student at the university of oregon.
this webpage is a product of a project i started in the spring of 2010.

-----------------------------------------------the story

i have done a lot of traveling in recent years. one of the things that struck me most in all my experiences was the proliferation of corporate signage in places that you just wouldnt expect. this spread of (mainly) western culture has created eyesores where there once was beauty and serenity.

i was astonished to see just how far corporations were willing to go to sell to the world.
a seven eleven at the base of the great wall of china.
a starbucks in beijings forbidden city.
i had been looking forward to visiting places like these all my life, only to have my attention
immediately drawn to a big neon sign trying to sell me more of the crap i see in advertisements everyday back home.

that is not to say that i did not enjoy my visits to these historic landmarks and monuments around the world. but i felt like, no matter how far away from the united states i was, there was no escaping the big corporations advertising / signage.

-----------------------------------------------the project

i went around to secondhand and thrift shops and bought old paintings. i wanted to ruin these peaceful pictures of serene landscapes, animals, etc. in the same way corporate signage has ruined so many beautiful places around the world.

i created stencils of some of the most recognizable and widespread corporate signs that i noticed in my travels. i then spray-painted these signs onto the paintings i had acquired. in much the same way corporate signage has defiled so many places around the world, i defiled these paintings with more signage, destroying the beauty that once existed in the untouched picture.

my hope is to allow people to think about how much corporate branding and advertising affect not only their lives, but the places in the world they love the most.

-----------------------------------------------

this blog is an opportunity for people to share their thoughts and images of corporate signage invading places they hold dear. this can be accomplished in 2 ways:

1. use the image files of corporate signage i have supplied (.ai, .pdf, and .jpeg) and add them to a picture of a painting in some way. then post the final image here for everyone to see.

or

2. submit both a picture and either the name of or image of a companys signage for me to combine into one image and i will then post the final image back on the blog.

either way, i want to get people involved in this project, and i hope it can continue, both on this blog and in peoples thoughts. always be conscious of how you and the world around you are being affected by these invasive eyesores of corporate existence.
